Since 1992, Rex has been a valued resident within our focus accommodation community. Over the years, he has experienced the charm of Safety Beach and the beauty of living at Red Hill. However, as time passed, Rex’s housing goals evolved. He expressed a desire to live closer to the beach, transport, and shops, fostering a sense of connection and convenience.

At the age of 67, Rex is ready for a new adventure, and we are thrilled to share his success story. This week, Rex made a significant move to a focus supported accommodation in Frankston, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in his life.

Rex’s journey to Frankston was driven by his desire to be part of a community where he felt more connected. During our planning sessions, Rex openly shared his thoughts and preferences. Rex wanted to live with housemates who shared his interests in car racing, lunches at the RSL, and football.

The process to find Rex’s ideal home was a collaborative effort. We engaged in numerous conversations to understand his vision for a perfect home. Rex expressed his wish to live near the beach, in a quieter environment, with housemates who enjoyed similar activities. He also desired a large bedroom, large bathroom, a big backyard for a veggie garden, and accessible facilities to accommodate his wheelchair.

Recently, a vacancy emerged at a focus SDA High Physical Support property that seemed to meet Rex’s preferences perfectly. We discussed the opportunity with the current residents. They were eager to welcome someone social and who they could be mates with.

The residents knew Rex and were keen to learn more. A house tour was arranged, and Cade, one of the residents, showed Rex around. They bonded over shared interests, discussing important topics like Holden vs. Ford and their favorite footy teams, even if their team loyalties and car preferences differed. The connection was instant, and both the current residents and Rex made the decision that this was the right fit.

The transition involved several steps to ensure Rex felt comfortable and supported. He attended a team meeting at Frankston, to share his story and ask questions about the house and its staff. The excitement was evident, and multiple check-ins helped ease Rex into the move.

Move in day went smoothly. The support from both house staff and Team Leaders was instrumental in making this transition seamless. The Frankston residents were very welcoming, with Cade and Rex organising a night out at the RSL to celebrate the move.

Rex is now settling into his new, spacious room with direct access to a garden where he can start to grow his veggies. His new housemates have embraced him, and we look forward to the happiness and friendships this new journey will bring. Rex’s story is a testament to the power of teamwork and person-centred support in achieving one’s goals.

We can’t wait to see the adventures that await Rex in his new home and community.
